The Moomba Tuckshop @ Bank of China Building

An extension of the Moomba Restaurant located along Circular Road, I have been trying to find time on one of my weekday afternoons to patronise this particular Aussie joint for her sandwiches.  Acclaimed as the Winner of Singapore’s Best Sandwich in the CNNGo’s Best Eats 2010 Awards and featured in Time Out Magazine as Singapore’s top sandwich deli, the Moomba Tuckshop offers an extensive selection of exquisite gourmet sandwiches.

It was a bright afternoon and it was apparent to us that the beams of sun ray shone through the glass windows of the venue, causing the deli to be bathed in a yellowish- white glow. Other than the neat arrangement of tables, chairs, benches and tall stools, I thought that the touch of white in the cafe, provided for a favorable setting for the sandwich deli. Small and simple, the Moomba Tuckshop seems to offer an ideal spot for my family to indulge in a fuss-free session of fine sandwiches.

Seafood ($9.00)

Lusciously stuffed with blue swimmer crabmeat, I thought that the creation was indeed a fine recommendation from the team behind The Moomba Tuckshop. I noted that the original vim of the highlight stood out on its own and unlike many of the common sandwiches out there (the sauce or dressings contribute more towards the overall flavor of the creation), it was not overwhelemed by the avaocado mayo, marinated wakame and tobiko. Moreover, the hint of subtle sweetness from the Walnut bread was distinctly brought out by its warmth.

Quizno Subs @ Orchard Central

Started in 1981 in Denver, Colorado, Quiznos has gained popularity rapidly in North America to become the second most popular subway chain there behind Subway. A few years back, Quiznos Sub finally arrived on our shores, however we did not get the chance to try it till recently when we chanced upon it at Orchard Central while searching for a convenient place to dine. Located in a hard to miss spot on the third floor, Quiznos was pretty quiet on the weekday we were there.

Famed for its freshly toasted sandwiches, I ordered a six-inch Zesty Steak sub which was supposed to be one of their best-sellers.

Black @ Tripleone Somerset

A coffee-lover, I have been meaning to try Black at Tripleone Somerset ever since my friend told me about this place serving gourmet coffee. Pretty full from a trip to Cold Stone Creamery, it was a pity I couldn’t try their range of delectable desserts or sandwiches.

The cafe was located across Applebees and was decorated with quirky items such as old-fashioned television and radio sets. We managed to get a seat at the sofa area which had different eletic chairs. The table that came with the area was unusual as well as it was a glass surface perched atop one of the retro television set.

Cedele @ Raffles City

Exhausted by our tour around the IT Fair; Bryan and I were in an immense need to settle down somewhere to take a break and to have a simple meal. Eventually, we decided on Cedele. The cafe offers affordable set meals and their signature items will probably be their cheap yet interesting sandwiches. One can get a Gourmet/Vegetarian Sandwish and a huge bowl of soup for just $10.00. Bryan and I decided not to get a set meal as we wanted to settle for desserts after our sandwiches.

An assortment of bread loaves, pastries, cupcakes and jam. Not just for their diners but for anyone’s convenience; its a concept of a bakery within a cafe itself. Not much of an uncommon sight in town, but definitely very convenient for their patrons or any passer-by in need of bread loaves or jams off the shelves.

Smoked Salmon ($7.00)

Had the Mixed Grain bread, which was quite hard and tough in my opinion.  The Smoked Salmon itself, however, did justice to most of the sandwich. Prepared with Homemade Dill and Yoghust Dressing, I would have preferred more dressing to complement with the salmon and bread. Nevertheless, the smoked salmon tasted fine and refreshing.

Generous servings of Smoked salmon; this ensures that one will enjoy more of the highlights of the sandwich than the bread itself, which is often not the case in many cafes or eateries.

Spicy Cajun Beef Avocado ($8.80)

Spicy beef simmered in Cajun Spices, there was a certain peppery flavor to the strips of beef and Bryan found it considerably spicy. Both of us preferred this to the Smoked Salmon as it was definitely a more flavorful and interesting sandwich as compared to the latter.  The mayo and avocado complemented the spicy beef by bringing a certain light flavor to the sandwich.

Carrot Walnut Cake ($6.00 for a slice)

A gigantic slice of cake indeed; the Carrot Walnut Cake was rich, moist and not too spongy. We provided our compliments on our first few tries and we were particularly appealed to the cream cheese, spreaded at the top, side and the middle of the cake itself. The cream cheese was sweet and it brought a tinge of sourness. The walnuts at the side brought a certain crush to the cake, which was definitely a plus-point for the cake. However, we have to admit that the cake is probably too generous of a serving as it grew uninteresting towards the end.

A cafe you might consider for a light snack or for simple coffee and pastries. The sandwiches and cakes are probably the highlights of Cedele. Very affordable prices without any GST or Service Charges, it is a venue for one to relax from an entire day of shopping at Raffles City or to satisfy the urge for a short and quick bite. Seatings are somewhat limited due to its rather small area and the cafe is actually quite cramped. Nonetheless, with their variety of sandwishes (segregated into Gourmet and Vegetarian), one might be spoilt for choice; which was why I took a long while before deciding on Smoked Salmon, what I would often have. A venue worth considering.
